What You Should Know Before Your First Experience

If you are considering an Ayahuasca retreat for the first time, it is essential to inform yourself thoroughly in advance. The internet offers a wide range of information about Ayahuasca—from enthusiastic personal testimonials to more critical perspectives.

As you begin your research, you will notice that there are different forms of Ayahuasca ceremonies. These can vary, for example, in group size, the duration of the ceremony, the style of guidance and who leads the experience—whether an experienced shaman, a medicine woman or a facilitator with their own established practice.

The insights and recommendations we share here are based on many years of personal experience with Ayahuasca, supporting ceremonies and working closely with an indigenous shaman and medicine women.

It’s important to understand: Ayahuasca is not a cure-all and not a “quick fix.” It’s a profound process that requires responsibility, inner readiness and a respectful approach to plant medicine. Conscious preparation, thoughtful integration and a safe, supportive setting are essential for a meaningful and lasting experience.

Facilitators & Support Team

The ceremonies take place in a calm, private setting in our Oca with a maximum of three participants. This small group size allows for a quiet and contained environment, where each person’s process can unfold without distraction or overstimulation. Each ceremony is guided by two experienced facilitators who remain present throughout the night. Their role is to hold a safe and steady space, ensuring that the environment remains grounded, respectful and attentive to the needs of each participant.

While every experience is unique, the structure of the ceremony is simple and supportive. After an initial opening and intention setting, participants are invited to settle into their own process. The facilitators remain attentive throughout, supporting the space as needed while allowing the experience to unfold naturally.

The focus is not on directing or shaping the experience, but on maintaining a safe container where each person can engage with the medicine in their own way.

Music, silence and periods of direct support may be used depending on what is needed in the moment. The emphasis is always on safety, presence and respect for the individual process within the group setting.
